Detecting pragmatic infelicities

چکیده

We study the logical properties that characterize pragmatic inferences and we show that classical understanding of notions such as entailment and defeasibility is not enough if one wants to explain infelicities that occur when a pragmatic inference is cancelled. We show that infelicities can be detected if a special kind of inference is considered , namely infelicitously defeasible inference. We also show how one can use strati-ed logic, a linguistically motivated formalism that accommodates indefeasible, infe-licitously defeasible, and felicitously defea-sible inferences, to reason about pragmatic inferences and detect infelicities associated with utterances. The formalism yields an algorithm for detecting infelicities, which has been implemented in Lisp.

A Formal and Computational Characterization of Pragmatic Infelicities

A Formalism and an Algorithm for Computing Pragmatic Inferences and Detecting Infelicities

Since Austin introduced the term infelicity, the linguistic literature has been ooded with its use. Today, not only performatives that fail are considered infelicitous but also utterances that are syntactically, semantically, or pragmatically ill-formed. However, no formal or computational explanation has been given for infelicity. This thesis provides one for those infelicities that occur when...

The Impact of Individual Differences on the Interlanguage Pragmatics of Iranian EFL learners in Institutional Discourse

This study investigated the impact of individual differences like language proficiency, gender and age on the Iranian EFL learners interlanguage pragmatics in institutional discourse especially, their capacity to recognize and to rate pragmatic and grammatical infelicities in speech act situations of request and apology.  To this end, one hundred and eighty-seven EFL university students at thre...

Flexible Expectations of Speaker Informativeness Shape Pragmatic Inference

Human communication relies on shared expectations between speakers and hearers. For example, upon hearing a sentence like “Some of my dogs bark,” the listener typically assumes that the speaker did not intend the literal semantic meaning (“At least one (and possibly all) of my dogs bark”). Instead, s/he is likely to derive a scalar implicature (SI), inferring that the speaker intended to convey...

Diagnosing truth , interactive sincerity , and depictive sincerity ∗

This paper presents two experimental findings pertaining to the semantics and pragmatics of superlative modifiers (at least, at most). First, in a scenario with N objects of a given type, speakers consistently judge it true that there are ‘at least N’ and ‘at most N’ objects of that type. This supports the debated position that the ignorance conveyed by superlative modifiers is an implicature, ...
